DJ Hip Hop, Washington DC United States
Raised outside the urban backdrop of Washington, D.C., Kendrick Som was no stranger to the east coast club and dance scene. Kendrick (or Sotola, as his close friends call him) had his beginnings as a DJ at LDS youth dances at the early age of 15. His mentor, Rob San Jose showed him the tricks of the trade and introduced him to the world of Euro-Dance and the underground electronic music scene. It wasn't long before Kendrick took what was given him and ran full force into the mainstream. Under the name Kapok, he started investing his time and energy to exploring the progressive, enigmatic style of music coming out of the woodwork known only by its euphoric effect placing its listeners in a so-called "trance". Influenced by its powerful effect, Kendrick started introducing Trance, in all its colors, casually while playing at intimate gatherings, eventually hitting the local college scene. Kendrick became an in house celebrity, known collectively at George Mason, James Madison, and Georgetown Universities as "The DJ". That was only the beginning.
In the midst of his rapidly rising popularity and renowned growing, Kendrick decided to take a break to serve a two year mission to Cambodia for his church. Upon his return, the scene had changed and the music evolved. Kendrick realized then that he too must advance for fear of being left behind. His insatiable love for music bred curiosity and his thirst for new horizons led him back to the turntables only this time it wasn't electronic music that was driving him. It was hip hop. Playing it large at local clubs the entity known as Xerious was born and history is now in the making.
Taking music to new levels, Xerious' skill and mastery behind the decks are uncanny. The Washington Post's Weekend Section writes, "He never ceases to amaze his audiences with heart-dropping beats and beautiful blends of both house and hip-hop, pushing the boundaries to the brink. Xerious' smooth, eclectic style and funky flair, along with amazing and instant crowd appeal, sets him apart from the rest." Heavily influenced by the likes of those like Jazzy Jeff, Qbert, the Alchemist, and others who have pioneered and evolved the art of turntablism, Xerious has continually raised the bar of how a party should be played each and every time he drops the needles.
Currently residing and throwing down parties in the Salt Lake City area, Xerious is currently working on some new, original (and very clandestine in nature) material. Be on the look out for his new studio mastered break set, "ILLUSIONZ," due out later this year. It's incredible to see how far this kid has come and it will be even more amazing to see what he'll do next. We can only await his overdue return to the DC Metropolitan area. The future is Xerious.
